OS X and macOS no longer makes it possible to run "classic" Mac applications written for "classic" Mac OS versions, such as System 7 or Mac OS 9. In order to run such applications, macOS users must now install "emulator" software that runs old versions of the Mac OS in a window on the macOS desktop. The most advanced of these emulator programs is SheepShaver. SheepShaver is no longer supported by its original author, Gwenolé Beauchesne, but updates, made by a programmer who calls himself or herself kanjitalk755, are available from an active support forum atE-Maculation.

How To Install Games On Sheepshaver For Mac

This page provides a system that makes it easy to set up and use SheepShaver under macOS 10.12 or later. You will need to supply a "ROM file" (as described below) and you will need an installation CD for any version of the Mac OS from OS 8.5 through 9.0.4, or a disk image of such a CD, as described below.

3. Prepare an installation-disk image for installing Mac OS 8.5 through 9.0.4. The step that follows this one (step 4) requires you to have a copy of an OS 8.5 through 9.0.4 installation CD on a disk image. (You cannot use an actual CD, only an image made from a CD.) The installation CD image must be one that was made from a retail CD, not one that came with a specific machine. Note that when installing, you should not try to format or initialize the virtual hard disk; it is already formatted, and contains some Apple-supplied updates for OS 8.6 and 9.0.4 in a disk image file in a folder named "OS Updaters". Some of these are US-English versions; other versions may be found through a web search.

(Important note: When installing OS 9, when you reach the menu that lets you specify which parts of the OS you want to install, click Options and turn off the option to "Update Apple Hard Disk Drivers"; for reasons that I don't understand, the OS installation will stall when this option is on. When booting from an OS 8.5 CD image, hold down the shift key to turn extensions off, or else the CD image may not boot; this is not required with OS 8.6.)

4. Start up SheepShaver and start working in Mac OS 8 or 9. When you restart the SheepShaver Wrapper again, it should now boot to the copy of Mac OS 8 or 9 that you installed; the installation-disk image will notbe mounted. The "Unix" folder in SheepShaver will be set to be your Documents folder in macOS. If you want to use a different folder as the "Unix" folder, or if you want to change the screen size or other features, use the Preferences menu.

It's also bit touchy when software tries to address memory that's out of bounds.. which they shouldn't be doing anyway, but there's quite a bit of poorly written classic Mac software out there. Especially games. There's a preference you can uncheck to make it tolerate those sorts of bugs, but it makes SheepShaver noticeably unstable.

It should be added that the extant devotees of WordPerfect for Mac, under the tutelage of John Rethorst, long ago used SheepShaver on newer Macs (OS X) to run the wonderful word processor. I don't have the address at hand but a search of the Yahoo groups for WordPerfect for Mac will turn up the site where you can download "kits" containing all you need to install SheepShaver and to run WordPerfect (which is included). The forum contains a tremendous amount of advice and counsel.

The WordPerfect/Mac discussion forum on Yahoo Groups provides a complete and easy to use installer for Sheepshaver in their files section. (You must join the group to access the files section. Joining is free and you can unsubscribe at any time.) The Sheepshaver installer there includes an installation of WordPerfect/Mac!

This forum saved my 55 year-old marriage! My wife is totally devoted to WP 3.5 for the Mac. She has evolved (since 1985) in her Mac usage to her latest, a PPC G5 iMac, running Tiger. WdPft has run somewhat shakily under Classic since we first moved to OSX. The G5 is now showing problems. I got my own new 3.06 Core 2 Duo iMac earlier this week. A beautiful machine. If I also got her one, would SheepSaver give her a "stable WdPfct? If so, then all would be truly right w/the world. Alternatively, I guess I could install XP (I can't believe I'm writing that!) and run WdPfct for WIN with Parallels. Any recommendations, hints, cautions, warnings . . . ?

Hello. I speak french and my english is not very good. Since I have installed Snow leopard on my Mac mini, I cann't have any connexion (via Ethernet) with my Cube PPC running Mac OS 9.2.2. But I need this connexion to read on 10.6 my DAO 's files coming from my 9.2.2. Do you think that with Sheepshaver I can have the connexion between the two of them to read my files ? Thanks !

You are correct that Snow Leopard eliminates AppleTalk, so file sharing with a Mac OS 9 machine is impossible. SheepShaver should work, according to this documentation: _for_sheepshaverBut other utilities are required, and it doesn't look easy!

On PowerPC Macintosh machines, you can install a Classic environment which launches a virtualised instance of MacOS 9 whenever you launch a Classic application. This environment has been dropped from Intel releases of Mac OS X, but thanks to SheepShaver, you can still set it up yourself on Mac OS X, Linux, Windows, and even BeOS if you want to. I decided to try SheepShaver on my Ubuntu machine, and discovered just how easy it really is.if(typeof ez_ad_units != 'undefined')ez_ad_units.push([[250,250],'osnews_com-medrectangle-3','ezslot_12',121,'0','0']);__ez_fad_position('div-gpt-ad-osnews_com-medrectangle-3-0');if(typeof ez_ad_units != 'undefined')ez_ad_units.push([[250,250],'osnews_com-medrectangle-3','ezslot_13',121,'0','1']);__ez_fad_position('div-gpt-ad-osnews_com-medrectangle-3-0_1'); .medrectangle-3-multi-121border:none !important;display:block !important;float:none !important;line-height:0px;margin-bottom:15px !important;margin-left:auto !important;margin-right:auto !important;margin-top:15px !important;max-width:100% !important;min-height:250px;min-width:250px;padding:0;text-align:center !important;

I loved OS9 in those days. My last machine was a Umax tower with a G4 CPU upgrade and loads of RAM. Everything was really snappy. But OS9 reached its limits and I guess it was ok that Apple decided to go for a totally new designed OS. Two great games I loved where Prime Target and Damage Inc. as well as those Ambrosia Software games.

Software and videogames were once on borrowed time, surviving only as long as the hardware on which they ran. But then systems became powerful enough to successfully mimic those that came before. So began the age of emulation.

In this feature, we explore the current state of emulation on macOS. We begin with how to emulate old Apple hardware such as the Apple II and Macintosh Plus. We then delve into emulating ancient PCs, classic consoles, arcade games, and a few much-loved home computers.

Having started life as a Pac-Man emulator in 1997, MAME has grown into a project that aims to preserve the entirety of arcade game history of the coin-operated variety. A rather nice side effect is being able to play said games if you install MAME.

Still listed as the highest-selling single computer model of all-time, the C64 was huge in the 1980s, with a wealth of amazing games, many of which still stand up today. On macOS, you can choose between VirtualC64 and VICE, the former being more Mac-like and the latter more flexible.

These bundles were put together by @that-ben and are intended to be the easiest possible for beginners. They already contain a compatible ROM file (1998-07-21 - Mac OS ROM 1.1 from an iMac G3), a 250MB hard disk image on which Mac OS 9.0.4 is already installed (as well as an optional empty 30GB, yes 30 gigabytes, disk image to accomodate heavy disk space use). The base hard disk image comes with a bunch of useful software on it, but please note that this 250MB disk image is not intended for users to install more software. If you intend to install software in your SheepShaver VM, then you will need to expand that blank 30GB file, attach it in SheepShaver preferences and copy the Mac OS 9 System Folder from the 250MB disk image to the 30GB one.

Pre-installed software includes: QuickTime 4.1 for multimedia playback, Stuffit Deluxe 7.0.3 for extracting/compressing Stuffit archives and MacBinary files (such as .sit, .hqx or .bin), Toast 5 Titanium for mounting/creating CD images (such as .iso or .toast), Virex 6.1 which was the best antivirus for Mac around year 2000, SoundApp which is an extraordinary compatible music player (plays close to 100 different formats such as .mp3, .wav or .mod) and a bunch of useful utilities such as Super ResEdit 2.4, DiskCopy 6.4 and TaskMenuBar 2.4.2.

What you need is a Mac that predates 2006. And it should have the original discs or Classic already installed. If it is older than August 21, 2001, you can install the retail version of 9.2.1 on it if it has a G3 or G4 processor on it.

If you are going to get SheepShaver, you are legally obliged to also have the Mac you are getting the ROM file from. So you might as well just get that Mac. Also many Classic games are better run on 9.1 to 9.2.2 which are not able to run on Sheepshaver in anycase.

This may not sound much, but Amazon's game launcher is a Windows-specific thing for playing games. Now, thanks to the integration support by Lutris, you can access and try playing the games available under Wine.

Making Mac games work is quite complicated compared to DOS games. You'll have to find a Mac computer ROM to emulate a Mac computer. These ROM files are quite annoying to get, you can extract one from a working Mac, or get one for vMac here (archived), or several one with this guide at Redundant Robot. You should then follow these guides: 2ff7e9595c
